Wilmington Nighthawks Teams
The Nighthawks have teams for the Mite (8 and under), Squirt (10 and under), Middle School (grades 5-8) and High School (grades 9-12) levels. We also have a Practice Squad, open to players of any abilities age 8 and under.
All team communication is through TeamSnap.
For more information on our teams, please see below.
Our Mites teams consist of players with birth year 2011 and under. All games and practices will be played on half-ice. This shrinks down the size of the ice to better reflect the size of the players and helps to build critical hockey skills. Half-ice hockey has many benefits: Players will get to touch the puck much more often, score more goals, goalies face more shots, etc. Even higher-level players face more of a challenge because players must learn real puck protection skills instead of relying on breakaways. And it’s fun!
Our Squirt teams consist of players with birth year 2009 and under. The team is independent and our scheduler sets up games with area teams of similar age and skill. All games are played at full ice. Home games are at the Skating Club of Wilmington and there is limited travel (within one hour) to area rinks for Away games. The practices are fast-moving with multiple stations teaching many various hockey skills. We typically play one game a week throughout the season. We always strive to win, but the emphasis is placed on developing hockey skills (skating, passing, agility, balance, etc.) as well as intangibles such as teamwork, character-building, and most importantly, having fun!
Our Middle School team consists of players in grades 5 through 8. This team is a member of the Delaware Scholastic Hockey Association (DSHA). Home games are at the Skating Club of Wilmington and there is limited travel (typically within one hour) to area rinks for Away games.
The DSHA lists their primary goals as the following:
Provide a fun developmental program for Middle School aged players in the Tri State area
Provide a rewarding and challenging experience for children looking to play the competitive sport of ice hockey
Promote the idea that children should be focusing on the values of working together in a team environment. To focus less on winning and losing and more on character and personal development
To educate the players to the notion of giving back to their communities, by aligning ourselves to the values of children’s organizations in the area
